June 8th, is a United Nations, recognized date of significance.
Around the globe, we come together to celebrate and protect our shared oceans, a vital source of life, above and below the surface of the water. Here in Canada, we have the longest coastline in the world. And it was at the Earth Summit in Rio De Janeiro in 1992, that Canada proposed this concept of World Oceans Day. Globally and here in our backyard, more than ever, we must celebrate and protect together.
A Collaborative World Oceans Day Event with: Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative, Blue Mar 4 Change, Ocean Wise Education, My Sea to Sky, Howe Sound/Átl’ḵa7tsem Marine Reference Guide and Squamish Arts Council
Welcome to our third annual World Oceans Day event FOR STUDENTS.
It started with a gymnasium full of students K-6, educators and family members at Mamquam Elementary School in 2019 where we engaged in a multimedia presentation, student messages, pod activities and welcome by Squamish Mayor, Karen Elliott. In 2020, we were honoured to have the Marine Detective, Jackie Hildering share her Ocean Wonders, that was truly wonderful! Organizations and individuals across our Howe Sound communities inspired us with their passion, resources and wisdom, shared online and out in nature to celebrate and protect our precious waterways.
Thank you TEACHERS for educating and inspiring our student learners every day.
